Renew ANU formal change process

Phase 3 - Future change update

University leaders have confirmed all future changes under Renew ANU will be achieved without involuntary redundancies.

On 20 August 2025 the University announced a move to ‘Phase 3’ of Renew ANU, with a commitment that any future changes beyond those already in consultation will be achieved without involuntary redundancies. Additionally, it was confirmed that no further formal change proposals will be released in 2025.  A second Voluntary Separation Scheme (VSS) will be open to eligible staff in the coming weeks, with further details to be provided soon, as Phase 3 of Renew ANU commences.

Change will continue at the University under Renew ANU this year as we still need to keep reshaping our organisation and reducing our salary costs, but this will not be done through change plans.

All future changes will be achieved through other mechanisms including:

  • realignments of reporting lines or teams, updates to duties or titles where required
  • continuation of the Recruitment Advisory Committee (RAC) processes
  • natural attrition
  • performance management (where appropriate)
  • voluntary separations.

Q2 and Q3 2025 - Change proposals released

All current Change Proposals and Implementation Plans will continue to be consulted, considered, and released to our community here on the Renew ANU website.

These areas released formal organisational change proposals in June and July 2025, and following a staff consultation period have now published Implementation Plans:

  • Planning and Service Performance Division
  • Information Technology Service and Information Security Office Divisions

These areas released formal Change Proposals in July and August and are now either still in the consultation phase or reviewing feedback and drafting their Implementation Plans:

  • ANU College of Science and Medicine
  • ANU College of Arts and Social Sciences
  • Academic Portfolio
  • Research and Innovation Portfolio
  • Residential Experience Division
  • Campus Environment Division

Following the release of each Change Proposal, a consultation period is opened to gather feedback from staff and students. This input helps shape the Implementation Plan, which is developed after the consultation closes.  These six areas above may still require involuntary redundancies to achieve the change required. To learn more about how feedback is considered and used during this process visit here.

The following areas won’t be completing formal organisational change, instead they will consider what change they need to undertake to meet their financial goals or to achieve structural and operational efficiency:

  • Marketing and Communications
  • People and Culture
  • Finance and Business Services
  • ANU College of Asia and the Pacific
  • ANU College of Business & Economics
  • ANU College of Law, Governance & Policy
  • ANU College of Systems and Society

Conclusion of 2025 proposals

No further formal change proposals will be released in 2025 under Renew ANU. Senior leaders will be held to greater accountability regarding compliance with budgets and resource allocation.

The Renew ANU change principles agreed earlier this year will continue to be implemented across the university to achieve financial sustainability and structural and operational reform.
